![]() Volvo's reputation for safety is evident in the advanced safety features, but the forward collision warning and automatic braking have a tendency to be overly sensitive and alarming when they trigger unexpectedly. Apple CarPlay works seamlessly, although wireless functionality is not yet available. On the bright side, the infotainment system's Google integration is generally pleasing, including Google Assistant voice controls and an impressive Google Maps display that shows up between the gauges. The absence of physical buttons and knobs means basic operations, like adjusting the climate control system, must be performed via the touchscreen. And with some controls buried under multiple menu layers, it's less intuitive than other systems. ![]() How’s the tech? As infotainment screens have grown over the years, Volvo's 9-inch touchscreen has become a bit less striking. Read our test team's Expert Rating below to see if the V60 Cross Country is the right fit for you. The Volvo's plastic-clad competitors include the Subaru Outback and Audi A4 Allroad, along with more conventional luxury SUVs like the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC and the V60's counterpart, the Volvo XC60. The V60 Cross Country isn't the only model balancing car and SUV, with a dash of adventurous spirit. Apple CarPlay is included, while Android smartphone users get more expanded features and services than with the former Android Auto app. Volvo has also rolled out its new Google/Android OS-based infotainment system, which promises faster response and deeper integration with Google search, navigation and streaming tech. It comes with welcome extras like ventilated seats and an upgraded sound system, but it's otherwise similar to the base Plus trim. Likewise, its 247-horsepower engine won't pin you back in your seat, but it's fine for city driving and freeway commutes and turns in respectable fuel economy - 26 mpg combined - in the process.įor 2023, the V60 Cross Country adds a second trim level, the loaded Ultimate model. Its 8 inches of ground clearance isn't enough to conquer off-road badlands like Moab, Utah, but it's enough to get you from trailhead to highway without issue. We expect that to change soon, as Volvo offers PHEV variants of its XC60 and XC90 crossovers, the S60 and S90 sedans and the V60 wagon. The V60 Cross Country builds on the standard V60 wagon with all-wheel drive, a lifted suspension and some protective body armor. Volvo has not yet outlined plans to bring the XC40 PHEV to our shores. In 2018, Volvo announced that the XC40 would be the first car in its lineup to go full-electric, and we expect to see specs on that offering before the end of the year. This is where the ICE variant of the XC40 T5 actually has an advantage over the PHEV: It's available with all-wheel drive. In this instance, Volvo mounted it in the XC40's battery in the tunnel beneath the compartment, where a shaft would normally route power to the rear wheels in an all-wheel drive configuration. Like most modern hybrids, the XC40 PHEV's battery pack is mounted just outside of the passenger and cargo areas, and occupying space otherwise needed for components in gasoline versions. Volvo claims up to 28.6 miles of all-electric range in the somewhat more optimistic WLTP cycle, so it's likely EPA range would be significantly more than 20 miles. These produce a total system output of approximately 260 horsepower, just besting the turbo-4 in the regular T5.
